Care tips

  • Light: They need abundant bright, indirect light, ideally with a few hours of direct morning sun. Southern or west-facing windows are often ideal indoor spots. Insufficient light can cause the plant to become leggy.
  • Watering: Use the "soak and dry" method. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the most common issue and can lead to root rot.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix, often amended with perlite, pumice, or coarse sand to ensure proper drainage.
  • Temperature and Humidity: They thrive in warm temperatures (18-27°C or 65-80°F) and prefer low humidity. They are not frost-tolerant and should be brought indoors if temperatures drop below 10°C (50°F).
  • Fertilizing: Feed monthly during the spring and summer growing season using a balanced, water-soluble succulent fertilizer diluted to half strength. No fertilizer is needed during the fall and winter dormancy period.
  • Pruning/Propagation: Pruning is minimal, mainly to maintain shape or remove damaged stems. Both varieties are easy to propagate from stem cuttings; simply allow the cutting to callus for a few days before planting in dry, well-draining soil.
