Hoya leucantha is a sought-after tropical species native to the West Papua Province of Indonesia. Known for its elegant, "draping" growth habit, it is often kept as an indoor climber or hanging plant.
Appearance & Features
- Foliage: Features thin, lanceolate (pointed) leaves. New growth emerges in shades of red or bronze before maturing into a deep green.
- Flowers: Blooms in clusters of creamy white flowers that typically open only at night or early morning.
- Scent: Unlike many fragrant Hoyas, its blooms have a distinct, often unpleasant odor described as similar to old rotten milk.
Care Requirements
To maintain a healthy Hoya leucantha, provide conditions that mimic its native wet tropical biome:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some gentle morning sun but should be protected from harsh direct afternoon sun.
- Watering: Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings, as it is highly sensitive to overwatering and root rot.
- Humidity & Temperature: Thrives in high humidity (at least 60%) and warm temperatures between 22°C and 28°C (71°F–82°F).
- Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining potting medium, such as a mix of orchid bark, perlite, and tropical potting soil.
- Toxicity: It is considered non-toxic to pets
