The Fittonia, commonly known as the nerve plant, is a pet-friendly, low-growing perennial native to South American rainforests, prized for its striking leaves with contrasting veins. It thrives as an indoor houseplant, particularly in humid environments like terrariums or bathrooms.
Care instructions
- Light: Fittonia prefers bright, indirect light and should be protected from direct, harsh sunlight, which can scorch its delicate leaves. An east- or north-facing window is an ideal location.
- Watering: The soil should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. The plant is known for its dramatic wilting when thirsty, but it will quickly perk up after a thorough watering.
- Humidity: High humidity is crucial for this tropical plant. You can increase humidity by misting daily, placing the pot on a pebble tray with water, or using a room humidifier.
- Temperature: Fittonia thrives in average room temperatures between 60°F and 85°F (15°C to 29°C). Avoid placing it near cold drafts or sudden temperature fluctuations.
