The Fittonia, commonly known as the nerve plant, is a pet-friendly, low-growing perennial native to South American rainforests, prized for its striking leaves with contrasting veins. It thrives as an indoor houseplant, particularly in humid environments like terrariums or bathrooms.

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch its delicate leaves, while too little light leads to leggy growth and loss of vibrant colour.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. A common rule is to water when the top inch of soil feels dry. If the plant wilts completely, it will usually perk up within a few hours of watering.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (), making it an excellent choice for terrariums or humid bathrooms. You can increase humidity by misting daily or using a pebble tray with water.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm environments between  and  (–). Protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally peat-based with added perlite or orchid bark for aeration.
